Albania’s geographic diversity is truly breathtaking. Towering mountains, including the Albanian Alps and the Shires, dominate the northern region and offer excellent hiking opportunities. The coastline stretches along the Adriatic and Ionian seas, with pristine beaches, charming coastal towns and secluded coves. Picturesque lakes inland such as Lake Ohrid and Lake Skadar offer a peaceful retreat into nature.

Albania has a rich historical background, influenced by various civilizations. Illyrians, Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans and Communists have all left their mark on the country’s cultural tapestry. Ancient city ruins and UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Butrint and Gjirokastra bear witness to Albania’s rich history. The country’s unique blend of Eastern and Western influences is also reflected in its architecture, cuisine and traditions.

Albania is a land of religious diversity and tolerance. The majority of the population follows Islam, with Sunni and Bektash sects being the most prominent. Christianity, including Catholic and Orthodox denominations, is also widely followed. The Bektashi Sufi order is unique to Albania and represents a mystical and fusional form of Islam. Albanians are known for their hospitality and respect for different faiths. Traditional customs, folk traditions and music play an integral role in Albanian culture, reflecting the country’s strong sense of identity and pride.

Tourism in Albania has been growing steadily in recent years, attracting tourists seeking off the beaten track destinations and immersive cultural experiences. The country’s diverse natural landscapes, including the Albanian Riviera and the Damned Mountains, attract adventurers and nature lovers. Infrastructure development, improved services, and increased accessibility through direct flights from various European cities have all contributed to the rise of Albanian tourism. However, the country’s unspoiled charm and untouched beauty have remained intact, offering travelers an authentic experience.

As an adventurous traveler, I was captivated by the hidden charms of Albania and decided to embark on a two-day exploration of this fascinating country.

The Valbona Valley

The Valbona Valley is a true paradise for nature lovers. As we trekked through the valley, we enjoyed breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and meandering rivers. The scenery is like a postcard, with every step of the way revealing stunning new sights.

Along the way, we encountered vibrant wildflowers in every color, from delicate blooms to bold and vivid petals. The fresh scent of the mountain air, combined with the sweet scent of the flowers in bloom, creates an intoxicating aroma that envelops our exploring footsteps.

When we worked up an appetite, our guide took us to a charming mountain hut in the valley. Here we enjoyed a traditional Albanian feast, showcasing the country’s rich culinary traditions. We tasted hearty dishes such as “tave kosi,” a succulent lamb and yoghurt casserole, and “qofte,” a delicious meatball made with a mix of herbs and spices. The meal comes with fresh baked bread, locally sourced cheeses and a variety of garden fresh vegetables. Every bite is a delightful explosion of flavors that truly reflects the rich and varied cuisine of Albania.

Seaside town of Saranda

The next day we embarked on a journey south to explore the charming seaside town of Saranda. The town’s seaside promenade captivates us with its colorful buildings and cozy cafés. As we walked along the coastline, the warm Mediterranean breeze caressed our faces, creating a feeling of blissful relaxation.

The highlight of our trip to Saranda was a visit to the ancient city of Butrint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walking through the well-preserved ruins, I seemed to step back in time, imagining the bustling city that once stood before me. Roman and Byzantine ruins stand, testifying to the city’s rich historical and cultural significance. The amphitheater, with its ancient stone seats, paints a vivid picture of the performances and events that once took place on the stage.

Throughout my travels, I have had the pleasure of meeting other travelers and locals who shared their stories, traditions and insights into Albanian culture. Their hospitality and genuine warmth added extra richness to my travel experience and made me feel truly welcome and at home in this remarkable country.

As for the fashion choices, I make sure that the clothes are comfortable and suitable for the activity and weather conditions. Due to the mountainous terrain of Valbona Valley, I opted for sturdy hiking boots, breathable clothing, and layers to accommodate temperature changes. In Saranda, I favored more casual, beach-friendly dressing, with light and breezy outfits to match the Mediterranean vibe.

Our two day adventure in Albania left us in awe of its natural beauty, rich history and hospitality. The breathtaking scenery of the Albanian Alps and the tranquil coastal charm of Saranda create an unforgettable experience. Albanian cuisine delighted our taste buds with its flavors and variety, while the friendly locals added warmth and authenticity to our journey. This hidden gem in the Balkans truly captured our hearts, leaving us eager to return and explore more of its hidden charms and underrated wonders.
