My food tour of Germany was an unforgettable experience. From the first bite to the last, I was captivated by the unique flavors, textures and aromas of German cuisine. I’m going to share with you seven must-try German dishes that will tantalize your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Sausage:

Bratwurst, the king of German sausages, is a real treat for meat lovers. Sausages are usually made from a mixture of finely ground pork, beef or veal and mixed with spices such as marjoram, nutmeg and garlic. The mixture is then stuffed into natural casings and grilled or fried to perfection, producing an enticing smoky flavor and juicy, tender texture. The crispy skin of the bratwurst is satisfying with every bite. The saltiness of the seasoned meat pairs perfectly with the tart crunchy sauerkraut and a dollop of spicy mustard, creating a harmonious symphony of flavors.

Pretzels:

German pretzels, or “Brezeln” in German, are an irresistible delicacy loved by locals and tourists alike. These pretzels have a unique shape characterized by a twisted appearance and looped knots. Dough is made from simple ingredients such as flour, water, yeast and a little salt. Once the dough is formed, it goes through a process called “lye dipping,” in which it is briefly soaked in an alkaline solution before baking. This gives the pretzel its distinctive deep golden brown color and contributes to its characteristic chewy texture. Slightly crispy on the outside while still soft and fluffy on the inside. Pretzels are often sprinkled with kosher salt, adding a burst of flavor with each bite. Whether enjoyed on their own or with a variety of dips like mustard or melted cheese, German pretzels are a delightful snack that combines a satisfying chewiness with a hint of saltiness.

Corned beef:

Sauerbraten, which means “sour roast,” is a beloved German dish that showcases the country’s skill in making tasty, tender meat dishes. Usually made with beef, the meat is marinated for several days in a mixture of vinegar, water and aromatic spices such as cloves, bay leaf and juniper berries. This curing process not only imparts a rich, slightly sweet flavor to the meat, but also helps to tenderize it, resulting in a melt-in-your-mouth texture. After marinating, the meat is slow cooked, allowing the flavors to deepen and develop. The resulting sauerbraten is a succulent and hearty dish, often served with a rich and flavorful gravy made from marinades. It pairs perfectly with traditional side dishes like red cabbage and dumplings to create a comforting and satisfying meal.

Schnitzel:

Schnitzel is a classic German dish with an international reputation for its simplicity and deliciousness. It usually consists of thinly sliced meat, such as pork or veal, that is tenderized, breaded, and deep-fried until golden and crisp. The breading process involves flouring the meat, dipping it in a beaten egg, and finally topping it with breadcrumbs to ensure a crispy crust when cooked. The result is a succulent schnitzel with a pleasing contrast between the crunchy exterior and the juicy meat inside. Schnitzel are traditionally served with fresh lemon juice for a refreshing flavor and served with classic side dishes such as potato salad or sautéed vegetables. With its combination of textures and flavors, schnitzel is a beloved dish that embodies the hearty and satisfying essence of German cuisine.

Sauerkraut:

Sauerkraut, which means “sour cabbage” in German, is a beloved side dish that has become synonymous with German cuisine. To make sauerkraut, shredded cabbage is fermented in brine, allowing beneficial bacteria to convert the cabbage’s natural sugars into lactic acid. This fermentation process gives sauerkraut its distinctive sour and slightly sour taste. The cabbage retains its pleasing crunch, while the fermentation adds a tangy flavor. Sauerkraut is often served with sausages, schnitzel, or other meat dishes, in contrast to the richness of the main course.

Rouladen:

Rouladen is a comforting hearty German dish that combines tender beef, mustard, onions, bacon and sauerkraut. Thinly sliced beef is seasoned, then coated with mustard and topped with onions, bacon and pickles. The meat is then rolled up and secured with toothpicks or cooking twine. The meatloaf is then browned and simmered in a rich gravy until tender. The result is a delightful combination of juicy and flavorful meat with the salty and tart flavors of mustard, onion and pickles. Served with red cabbage and potatoes, ved creates a satisfying and comforting meal that is the epitome of German comfort food.

Black forest cake:

Indulge your sweet tooth with a slice of the iconic Black Forest Cake. This delicious dessert consists of layers of moist chocolate sponge cake, cherries and whipped cream. The cake is often soaked in cherry brandy, cherry brandy, which adds a light booziness to the dessert. The layers are then covered with more whipped cream, decorated with chocolate chips and topped with cherries. Rich chocolate, juicy cherries and light whipped cream combine for a harmonious flavor and texture. Every bite is a delightful balance of sweet and sour, making the Black Forest Cake a must-try dessert for all visitors to Germany.
